  • Using SQL for Data Analysis
  • Data Visualization in Tableau

This project follows the learning covered in the Udacity Business Analytics Nanodegree’s third module Data Visualization in Tableau.

Build Data Dashboards

Learn how to select the most appropriate data visualization for an analysis. Learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of a data visualization and build interactive and engaging Tableau dashboards.

Flights

  • Your visualization work should use Tableau: other visualization tools may not be evaluated by reviewers.
  • Remember that your visualization should be explanatory in nature and communicate specific results that you want to show.

Submission

  • A PDF report that includes the following sections:
    • Links to your dashboards or story
    • Summary: a brief description of the visualization and the main story or findings conveyed
    • Design: explain any design choices you made including changes to the visualization after collecting feedback
    • Resources: list of Web sites, books, forums, blog posts, GitHub repositories, etc that you referred to or used in this submission (Add N/A if you did not use such resources).

Query a Digital Music Store Database

Udacity Business Analytics Nanodegree program is divided into 3 modules culminating in a project after each module.

  1. Introduction to Data
  2. Using SQL for Data Analysis
  3. Data Visualization in Tableau

This project Query a Digital Music Store Database follows the learning covered in the second module Using SQL for Data Analysis.

SQL Queries

CriteriaMeets Specifications
The student can write error-free SQL queries. All SQL queries run without errors and produce the intended results.
The student can use joins correctly in SQL queries. Each SQL query needs to include one or more explicit join(s). The query's JOIN or JOINs should be necessary to answer the question. If a question does not require a JOIN, please change the question to be one that does.

Example:
SELECT *
FROM Album
JOIN Track on Track.AlbumID = Album.AlbumID
The student can use aggregations correctly in SQL queries. Each SQL query needs to include one or more aggregation(s). This could be a COUNT, AVG, SUM, or other aggregation.
Student can answer multiple questions by using SQLThe student has used at least 4 unique SQL queries in their submission.

Presentation

CriteriaMeets Specifications
The student’s slides are organized well and are easy to read and understand. Each slide should have an appropriate title, and the visualization descriptions should be free of significant factual, spelling, and grammar mistakes.
The student can create data visualizations that provide useful information. All visualizations should make logical sense and provide accurate information about the indicated area.
The student can format data visualizations clearly and make good use of labeling. All visualizations include a title and axis labels, have a legend where applicable, and are easily understood.

Every visualization should have

chart title
x-axis title
x-axis labels
y-axis title
y-axis labels

Submission Phase

CriteriaMeets Specifications
The student has uploaded all files necessary for review.

A PDF report has been uploaded, and a .txt file with the queries has been uploaded in a single zipped folder file

Project: Analyze NYSE Data

Disclosure: This post contains Udacity affiliate links, meaning we might be compensated for you clicking and buying Udacity products through the affiliate links.

Udacity Business Analytics Nanodegree program is divided into 3 modules culminating in a project after each module.

  1. Introduction to Data
  2. Using SQL for Data Analysis
  3. Data Visualization in Tableau

This project Analyze NYSE Data follows the learning covered in the first module Introduction to Data.

Introduction

Kaggle’s New York Stock Exchange S&P 500 dataset

In this project, an analysis is made of real life data from the New York Stock Exchange drawing a subset of a large dataset provided by Kaggle that contains historical financial data from S&P 500 companies.

What do I need to install?

Any spreadsheet application could have been used including Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, etc. I have used Microsoft Excel.

Why this Project?

Going through the process of calculating summary statistics, drawing any inference from the statistics, calculating business metrics, and using models to forecast future growth prospects for the companies. The goal is to perform an analysis and also create visual tools to communicate the results in informative ways.

Used a clean data set for this project. Although in real-life scenarios, data sets often need to be cleaned and processed before analysis can proceed. This project allows to see what a clean data set should look like.

Background:

Used the Fundamentals.csv and Securities.csv files provided by Kaggle. The Fundamentals file provides the fundamental financial data gathered from SEC 10K annual filings from 448 companies listed on the S&P 500 index. The Securities file provided the industry or sector information the companies are categorized under on the S&P 500 index.

What skills will I use?

The main goal of this project is to demonstrate ability to:

  • interpret the measures of central tendency and spread (mean, median, standard deviation, range).
  • use a combination of Excel or Google Sheets functions (e.g., IF statements, INDEX, and MATCH, calculating descriptive statistics with the IF statement, dropdowns, data validation, VLOOKUP).
  • analyze and forecast financial business metrics using Excel or Google Sheets.
  • create visualizations of a business metric and use Excel or Google Sheets to create a financial forecast model.
